Energy efficiency saves family 200 a month

11 September 2008

Energy efficiency measures such as ground source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and extensive insulation have helped one family save £200 a month on their energy bills.

Sarah Armstrong's family moved into a home on the 22-town house Ecostessey Park development four months ago and have noted a significant difference in their electricity and gas costs.

The family of five, who previously lived in a converted barn, are saving £200 a month compared to their previous home, Ms Armstrong told the Norwich Evening News.

But the potential savings from the energy efficiency devices were not originally the main draw.

Ms Armstrong said: "What we liked about the house was that it was a really nice, spacious four-bedroom house and the eco part was secondary."

However, a recent survey from the Energy Saving Trust revealed that homebuyers were more likely to buy a home which had good energy performance.

As well as reducing their domestic energy consumption, the development, which is on a bus route has helped reduce the amount they have to use the car.

Ms Armstrong added: "The kids like it better and it's on a bus route and a bus every half hour into town - we're now only three miles away from the city centre instead of 14."
