Energy efficiency and decarbonisation of the energy industry is essential to meeting long term and short term carbon emissions reduction targets, according to the UK Energy Research Centre (UKREC).
A report it published last month called for legislation to be put in place to enable the meeting of targets.
Current legislation it, it claims would lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 15 per cent by 2020 below the 2020 target.
If legislation remained the same it would achieve a 40 per cent reduction in emissions by 2050, just half the 80 per cent target.
It recommended decarbonising the electricity industry and noted the need for energy efficiency to cut demand by a quarter.
The reports main thrust was similar to one published by the Committee for Climate Change.
It emphasised the importance of making existing homes more energy efficient.
As a result of making a home more energy efficient, households will also cut their energy bills.
