Eco-village receives the go-ahead

01 July 2009

Proposals to develop an eco-village on the site of an old quarry and cement works in County Antrim have received the go-ahead.

The development would be mixed-use and located on the harbour-side at the location near Larne.

Up to 450 environmentally-friendly houses are to be included in the project along with a railway and visitor centre, bird watching facilities and hotel and community services.

Environment minister Sammy Wilson said: "This is an imaginative and unique opportunity for Northern Ireland that will reuse what has become a redundant quarry and replace it with a major tourist attraction.

"With strategic rail and road transport links readily available due to its close proximity to Larne - one of the gateways to Northern Ireland - this will provide a boost for the tourism industry across the province.

Lafarge Cement UK will be responsible for carrying out the work on the project, which could create up to 400 jobs within the area.

The site is to become Ireland's first One Planet Living Community.
