Community groups have been invited to take part in a nationwide competition aimed at finding the most environmentally-friendly public building.
Following on from the recent success of the 'green streets' competition, which saw eight roads across the UK compete to see which could achieve the greatest energy savings, this latest initiative will be open to any community group keen to cut back on their energy consumption.
The government-backed scheme will benefit from £2 million worth of funding from British Gas, with money to be awarded to community groups that are able to make use of measures such as insulation and double glazing to cut back on their energy usage.
The funding will go to a shortlist of 14 community groups, with deadlines for applications set for the end of August.
Announcing the launch of the scheme, Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas, said: "We hope that community buildings - which can include pubs and schools - will come up with more of them, perhaps for generating energy as well as saving it."
He added that, as with the green streets contest, this new competition should help generate energy-saving ideas for public buildings across the UK.
