A plan to convert London's business waste into renewable energy has been announced by the city's mayor this week, it has emerged.
The strategy, entitled Making Waste Work in London, will attempt to recycle or re-use 95 per cent of the city's construction or demolition waste, 85 per cent of which is currently recycled.
It is hoped that London's businesses will recycle a total of 70 per cent of their waste by 2020, a figure up from 44 per cent at present.
"Wherever possible, we need to use waste to generate clean, renewable energy, turning it into a resource rather than a problem to be dumped," London mayor Ken Livingstone said in a statement.
A consultation on the scheme is expected to run until June 13th, with the exception of the pre-election period, which will take place between March 18th and May 2nd.
According to edie.net, the city is also exploring ways to cut down on the carbon emissions its waste management systems produce, including alternatives to incinerators.
