As power consumption and energy costs continue to rise unabated for data-heavy enterprises, end users are beginning to make power a priority and take a closer look at their existing power infrastructures, including uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), it has been claimed.
According to Frost & Sullivan (F&S), this current state of affairs is creating opportunities for UPS upgrades and shipments, something that vendors need to exploit.
The analyst estimated that first quarter UPS shipments generated $1.8 billion (£910 million) of revenue, suggesting a 10.5 per cent growth over the first quarter of 2007. F&S highlighted strong performance in Europe, where revenues increased by 18.3 per cent.
"Positive demand for three-phase UPS units is driven by datacenter developments within co-location, internet hosting and financial services," said Farah Saeed, senior consultant at the company.
"Furthermore, concerns regarding power consumption and energy inefficiencies encourage end users to re-evaluate existing power infrastructure."
According to IDC, the cost of powering and cooling enterprise spinning hard disk drives rose to over £650 million in 2007, and is expected to exceed £1 billion by 2009.
