Sustainable heating measures will feature in a development designed to reduce the cost of running homes.
The plans for seven homes in Wellingborough aim to create a healthy living environment while keeping down energy costs for its prospective residents.
Wellingborough Borough Council mayor Eileen Higgins turned the soil at the site of the development, which will be heated by an air source heat pump, which collects heat from the atmosphere.
Jasper Hart, chairman of the Northamptonshire Rural Housing Association, told 24dash.com: "It's great news for local people who often find it hard to afford properties in the villages theyve grown up in and are forced to live elsewhere."
While new homes are expected to meet increasingly stringent energy regulations, various organisations have noted that in order to combat climate change and fuel poverty it is also essential to increase energy efficiency of existing buildings.
Under existing legislation every time a home is bought or rented, the buyer or tenant must be allowed to see and energy performance certificate detailing the property's efficiency.
