Severe weather warnings issued after freezing night

The Met Office has issued severe weather warning across the UK after temperatures fell to as low as -10C overnight.

The Scottish Highlands can expect freezing rain this morning while there are warnings of widespread icy roads throughout the south-east of England and London.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the minus figures into Wednesday, after freezing conditions forced the closure of schools across the country and affected flights in and out of Luton and Birmingham airports yesterday.

On Monday water company Severn Trent warned its customer in the Midlands and Wales to protect their water systems after reports that pipes were freezing.

There is particular concern for those in a vulnerable condition during the Arctic temperatures, with Age Concern urging older people to take extra precautions to keep warm and remain active during the cold period.

Weather experts predict temperatures in the south of England will fall to -8 or -9C tonight as a high pressure system continues to affect UK weather.
