Mayor urges older Londoners to know their rights

10 January 2009

As the cold weather continues to bite, the mayor of London has launched a campaign to help older people in the capital to keep warm.

Boris Johnson has joined forces with a number of groups, including the Energy Savings Trust, to unveil the Know Your Rights scheme.

It is aimed at encouraging older Londoners to take advantage of all the benefits they are entitled to, including those which help people cut heating bills and keep warm.

Mr Johnson said: "As the temperature plummets, it is vital that our older citizens claim cash which would help them worry less about the cost of heating their home.

"Many older Londoners are missing out on a range of benefits they have toiled hard over their lives to earn, as are many carers who dedicate their lives to looking after others."

He added that some residents believe that if they live alone or have savings in the bank that they don't qualify for any help "but this isn't always the case".
