The sun's heat is to warm the water and cut the energy bills of 49 homes in the historical centre of Edinburgh.
Solar water heating is to be installed on seven B-listed Georgian tenements as part of the Renewable Heritage project.
More than half of the annual hot water needs of the residents in the World Heritage Site will be met by the renewable heat source, according to environmental charity Changeworks, which has produced a guide on small scale renewable energy generation.
Jenny Lewis, chair of partner organisation, the Lister Housing Co-operative, said: "This project will help reduce our tenants' fuel consumption, save carbon and support Scottish jobs, without in any way jeopardising our B-listed Georgian tenements it's a win-win solution."
Meanwhile, all homes in the UK are to get access to a whole-building green makeover in order to meet a target announced earlier this month by energy and climate change secretary of state Ed Miliband.
He said that by 2050 all existing homes would be near zero carbon.
