'Double-standards' found at green building event, claims journalist

09 March 2010

A journalist has highlighted the double-standards of certain companies exhibiting at Ecobuild 2010.

Writing for the Guardian, Donnachadh McCarthy noted various environmentally damaging practices at the green building conference held in London this week.

The event features nearly a thousand exhibitors and reaches out to over 35,000 visitors. But Mr McCarthy wrote that exhibitors were not offering a leading example on being "truly green".

"I was greeted with a blaze of halogen lighting and plastic exhibition stands," wrote the journalist.

He added: "If Ecobuild, its exhibitors and its sponsors are to demonstrate that they are not just cynically in this for the green pound they should be trying much harder."

Debating the issue, Ecobuild spokesman David Wood, told Mr McCarthy: "The more important thing is that it stimulates the industry rather than the fact that there are a few light-bulbs on."

He added that the event was making some efforts and that the acres of flooring laid specially for Ecobuild would be recycled and the organisers would consider holding a competition for the "greenest stall" in next year's exhibition.
