Future looks dim for 100 watt bulb

08 January 2009

With homeowners across the country looking to become more energy efficient, shops are being encouraged to stop selling 100 watt bulbs.

Sales of traditional lightbulbs have fallen in recent months with people turning instead to low-energy fluorescent bulbs which can save money.

According to Tesco, which sells more bulbs than any other retailer in the UK, it plans to stop vending both 100 watt and 75 watt bulbs within the next few weeks.

As well being more eco-friendly, using a low wattage bulb can save as much as £7 a year in electricity.

The government recently signed an EU agreement which stated it would work towards replacing the conventional 100 watt lightbulbs which have been around for 120 years.

According to the Daily Mail, Sainsbury's is almost out of stock of 100w bulbs, while Homebase, John Lewis, Asda have confirmed they no longer have them on their shelves.
