Feed-in tariffs increase interest in solar panels

09 February 2010

More consumers are choosing to install renewable energy generators in their home, according to reports from npower.

The energy company has said that its enquiries regarding solar panels have increased by 200 per cent since July 2009.

This increase ties in with the government's announcement of feed-in tariffs which allow consumers to earn money from any surplus electricity generated in their home.

Julia Lynch-Williams, director of energy services at npower, commented: "According to government calculations, consumers generating their own electricity from solar PV panels could earn approximately £986 per year from tax free generation payments and bill savings combined."

She added that the new arrangement will make solar energy a "more attractive investment than it's ever been".

According to npower, a viable source of solar energy in the home requires at least ten square meters of free south-facing roof space.
