Consumers feel the issue of green energy providers is "complex", according to the head of home services for uSwitch.
Tim Wolfenden said people are having a difficult time buying into the idea of green electricity and gas because the issue has not been explained in a way they can understand.
"We found only about one per cent of the UK has really gone on to green [providers] - about 200,000 to 250,000 users," he said.
However, he added that in the midst of rising electricity and gas prices - including a 15 per cent rise for both electricity and gas on British Gas' dual fuel tariff - there are a number of customers looking to switch to energy plans that provide quality service at a competitive price.
"Consumers are really interested in getting a better service for their money," he concluded.
It is thought that British Gas customers on a dual fuel tariff will pay around £1,051 on their annual electricity and gas bill, an increase from £912 according to figures from uSwitch.
