The Ukrainian government has said it is in talks with Russia to try to keep gas prices for its householders and businesses as low as possible, it has been reported.
According to Reuters, the eastern European country's prime minister said that officials were currently negotiating an agreement which will stop utility bills going up.
Speaking to representatives from the metal industry, Yulia Tymoshenko said: "We are at the moment working to retain the 2009 gas price as it is today.
"We are working on this, but an agreement has not yet been signed."
Over the last three years, Russia has steadily increased its gas prices although Ukrainians still pay less than most other European countries.
The debate over how much Russia should be paid for gas has caused rifts in the past, with one such incident occurring in January 2006.
That month a gas supply cut was made which had a small impact on other European countries, that receive just under 25 per cent of their gas needs from Russia via Ukraine.
