Small and medium-sized businesses are missing out on energy savings of over £1 billion, it has been claimed.
Recently published research from the Institute of Directors (IoD) claims improving the energy efficiency of businesses can reduce UK dependency on imported energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as saving money.
David Boomer, head of energy efficiency and climate change at the IoD, said: "We have shown in the report that many businesses are addressing energy efficiency."
He added that 60 per cent of firms do not have an energy management policy or strategy, while 52 per cent do not have an employee with direct responsibility for energy management.
In June 2008, the Carbon Trust announced a partnership with the British Computer Society to develop software to help businesses comprehend energy use in data centres.
The Carbon Trust notes data centres account for a quarter of all carbon emissions related to IT.
