Recession seeing businesses go green

03 January 2009

British firms are adopting more eco-friendly practices as the recession starts to bite, it has been suggested.

According to British Eco Energy, the difficult financial conditions are "stimulating a lot of companies'" environmental efforts.

Andrew Moore, managing director of the advisory group, said that companies are looking to save money and therefore introducing energy efficient measures to cut utility bills.

He added that firms are also increasingly aware of the importance of promoting a 'green image' successfully to their customers.

"There's quite a lot of focus on renewables at the moment, even if it's just from an economic point of view, trying to reduce energy bills which have gone up a lot," Mr Moore explained.

Figures release in July 2008 by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform found that renewables accounted for five per cent of electricity generated in the UK in 2007, up from 4.5 per cent in 2006.
