Loft insulation, which helps homes make energy savings and cut their fuel bills, is to be installed for free in 5,000 council homes.
The North Tyneside Council has announced plans to offer insulation free of charge to poorly insulated homes in a bid to reduce fuel poverty in the borough.
A household is said to suffer fuel poverty when it spends one tenth of its income on heat and electricity.
According to the News Guardian, executive director of community services Paul Hanson told a cabinet meeting: "This is part of our 'warmzone' programme to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
"Bungalows will be first and areas of deprivation where fuel poverty is a problem."
Council officers claimed that loft insulation could reduce heat loss by a quarter and save tenants more than £60 a year on energy bills.
According to the Energy Saving Trust homes can save around £60 if they already have limited insulation, but homes without any could see their savings reach £205 a year.
