Global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is likely to remain strong enough for the development of new projects in Australia to be worthwhile.
A spokesperson for ConocoPhillips told Bloomberg that new projects in the Queensland state will be able to support demand growth in the coming years.
Ryan Lance, senior vice-president for international exploration and production at the oil major, said that demand will be there and that LNG will become a "fuel for the future".
ConocoPhillips is currently partnering Origin Energy over work to convert gas from coal seams near the city of Gladstone into LNG. First exports are targeted for delivery in 2014.
Last month, ConocoPhillips highlighted a number of unresolved issues relating to the American Clean Energy and Security Act 2009, suggesting that currently, proposed caps on greenhouse gas emissions may not be fairly allocated among fuel producers and their consumers.
Besides this, there is inadequate protection for domestic fuel suppliers from international competition, the company added.
ConocoPhillips operates under the JET brand in the UK and offers fuel through 400 independent service stations.
