Gas customers are being left out of pocket an average of £79 each because they are overpaying their utilities provider, according to the latest research.
Six million UK households are in credit by a total of around £449 million yet two million homes are in debt by nearly £224 million, moneysupermarket.com says.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at the firm, said: "Bill payers have borne the brunt of unprecedented increases to gas prices this year and worse still, it has come at a time when we are all feeling the financial pinch.
"Almost four fifths of consumers have made no attempts to ask for their money back from providers and this is worrying in the current financial situation."
She advised that bill payers rethink their direct debit every six months to ensure they are paying the right amount.
"There is a clear call to action here", she said, adding: "If you are in credit by a huge amount then speak to your supplier to get that money back and adjust your monthly debit."
Research unveiled last week by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development showed that utility bills in the UK have risen at more than twice the rate of those in France and Germany.
