Funds for energy efficiency to help fuel poor

23 December 2008

In a bid to cut the energy bills of people suffering fuel poverty in Wales, the assembly has announced £5.8 million to offer homes insulation and heating measures.

The funs will contribute towards the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme (HEES), which makes homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.

Minister for environment, sustainability and housing, Jane Davidson, said: "This new funding shows that tackling fuel poverty is a priority for the Assembly Government. Funding for HEES, which provides much needed help to those who need it the most, will increase to almost £23 million this year."

She added that tackling fuel poverty involved making homes more energy efficient, improving people's income and getting households the best fuel tariffs.

According to Friends of the Earth Cymru, the amount of homes in fuel poverty – which means they spend one tenth on their income on energy bills – has risen in Wales from 130,000 in 2004 to 243,000 in 2006.
