Energy efficient homes to have £43 annual energy bills

Homes and businesses running on 70 per cent less energy could feature in the country's first eco-development, according to the architect.

Plans for the £7.5 million development on a ten-acre site on the outskirts of Long Sutton include energy efficient houses and commercial units deigned by Sustainable Ecological Architecture.

According to the company, the homes, which will have negative CO2 emissions, meaning they will save more carbon than they emit, will have annual energy costs of about £43 a year.

The firm's Jerry Harrall told Spalding Today: "Woe betide anyone who ignores the inevitable. We have got to plan for it. Everything here will be fossil fuel free. This is what the eco-town movement should be doing. The businesses and homes here will run on at least 70 per cent less energy."

He added that the project is the greenest development of its type in the country.

By 2016 all new homes are expected to be zero-carbon.
