Energy costs cut with ground source heat pumps

08 November 2008

Ground source heat pumps can reduce the cost of heating and cooling a building by as much as 70 per cent, according to a provider.

Geothermal International claims that businesses could slash their operating costs by installing a ground source heat pump.

Heating and cooling commercial premises accounts for 40 per cent of a company's energy budget, according to the company.

As well as reducing operating costs, ground source heat pump systems could also cut carbon dioxide emissions by 50 per cent.

Homes can also benefit from the systems, though experts suggest that ground source heat pumps are most accessible for new build homes before they are completed as installing one involves digging under ground.

A school in Wrexham has recently undergone a refurbishment which features a ground source heat pump as well as solar panels on the roof.

Wrexham council leader Aled Robert told the Daily Post: "Ysgol Maes Y Mynydd is our newest showcase school in Wrexham improving the quality of education for young people."
