Twelve communities across the UK have been awarded up to £500,000 each to help install green technologies.
Insulation, solar panels and hydro turbines will all be bought with the prize money.
Energy and climate change minister Joan Ruddock commented: "This sort of action is vital because over a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions come from heating, lighting and powering electrical appliances in our homes.
"By 2050 this needs to be almost zero and we can only achieve that through the creative initiative of local communities."
The prize money was awarded through the government's Low Carbon Community Challenge grant fund, which aims to inform the government of what works at a local to help cut emissions.
The winning communities include towns in Cheshire, Middlesbrough, Halton and Exmoor.
A mixture of wealthy and deprived areas was chosen for the award.
Easterside in Middlesbrough announced that its award will be used to save residents money on household bills by installing wind turbines, renewable energy systems and wind turbines.
