Birmingham Council is to carry out a survey on private sector homes to judge how energy efficient the properties are.
The council is carrying out the surveys in order to assess the standard of living and the fuel efficiency of private sector homes, which are generally not as closely monitored as council-owned homes.
Councillor John Lines, cabinet member for housing said: "This survey is crucial for us to be able to gather essential information which will help us further improve conditions in the private sector, especially at a time when government funding for private sector renewal is reducing."
He added: "We remain committed to helping our most vulnerable home owners get the support and assistance they need to live in warm, energy efficient homes with modern facilities."
Since 2006, Birmingham council has helped over 34,000 low income households in the private sector afford thermal efficiency methods to reduce their fuel bills and tackle fuel poverty.
