Almost a third of Britons use green electricity, according to a survey.
While 70 per cent of Britons are buying electricity from traditional energy providers, 30 per cent are seeking out energy tariffs that reduce their carbon emissions.
The study carried out by Mark Webster at the graduate school for the environment at the Centre for Alternative Technologies showed that there is demand for energy tariffs that contribute less to climate change.
More than half of the people using green energy tariffs claimed to be getting their energy directly from one of the three main green electricity suppliers, Good Energy, EcoTricity and Green Energy.
Good Energy is the only one which sources 100 per cent of its electricity from renewables.
The remainder, 14 per cent of all electricity users polled, said they purchased their green electricity from one of the mainstream suppliers.
Energy generator Ofgem recently updated guidelines for marketing an energy tariff as green.
Providers now have to demonstrate that they benefit the environment beyond the legal requirement already imposed on them by the government.
