A new survey released by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has indicated that 53 per cent of people cannot tell the difference between the quality of light from a regular or energy efficient light bulb.
The EST's Light Bulb Challenge, which was conducted in the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent, found that of the 761 people surveyed, more than half either could not tell the difference or guessed incorrectly when prompted to distinguish between light from a regular light bulb and an energy efficient one.
Phillip Sellwood of the EST claims this indicates a shift in public perception about the quality of energy saving bulbs and suggested that people should not be afraid they will compromise the look or feel of their home.
"It's true that a few years ago energy saving light bulbs were pretty ugly looking and didn't provide good light," he said. "That's certainly a thing of the past."
Previous research carried out by the EST has indicated that each light bulb replaced with an energy saving equivalent could save up to 26kg of carbon emissions and up to £7.
