A new solar-powered paint developed by UK researchers could soon be used to enable buildings constructed from architectural steel the ability to generate their own energy, NewScientist.com has reported.
The paint, which is being developed by a team led by David Worsley at Swansea University, helps to protect steel from being degraded by the elements and may also offer an electricity-generating boost.
Scientists are currently conducting demonstration tests of the paint on small-scale samples of steel and are collaborating with research teams from other universities to figure out the best improvements to be made to the different layers.
Michael Gratzel of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology claimed that the new paint system is "very rugged" and claimed that some cells tested in Japan have managed to maintain full efficiency after four years of outdoor testing.
Meanwhile, solarpower.co.uk has claimed that home-generated renewable energy is a good way to save on more expensive electricity and gas bills.
