Carbon Hero ¿ which uses satellite navigation technology to track journeys - was the regional winner of the 2007 European Satellite Navigation Competition, sponsored by ESAs Technology Transfer Programme.
The new technology may help cut global warming by making people more aware of their carbon footprint.
The designers of the innovation say it could cut global warming by helping people calculate the environmental impact of travel.
Andreas Zachariah, a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Art in London and inventor, said the portable device could track personal CO2 emissions using different modes of transport by using satellite navigation data to measure the distance, type of transportation and calculate the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
"We have now tested our application using GPS and it has proved to be very efficient. Once Galileo, the European global navigation satellite system, becomes fully operational its increased accuracy will aid Carbon Hero to measure journeys and then determine their carbon footprint," said Mr Zachariah.
