Young people 'need to be heard on climate change'

12 December 2008

Young people should have a greater say in the decision making process for tackling climate change, according to Unicef UK.

The charity, which was represented at the UN climate summit in Poznan Poland by climate change project manager Lucy Stone, has called on negotiators to pay more heed to the voice of young people.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change executive secretary Yvo de Boer agreed, saying "the youth voice is not being heard by negotiators".

According to the NGO, the youth representatives present said: "All we need now is for our political leaders to make the plans that we are already ready, willing and prepared to implement."

The call comes days after energy and climate change secretary of state Ed Miliband urged people to engage in a "popular mobilisation" to put pressure on politicians to prioritise dealing with climate change.

He said: "There will be some people saying 'we can't go ahead with an agreement on climate change, it's not the biggest priority'. And, therefore, what you need is countervailing forces."
