Met Office: Ten years to fight climate change

11 December 2009

Posted by Emily Thomas

The UK Met Office (UKMO) has warned that unless carbon emissions are cut drastically over the next ten years, the planet could face disastrous consequences.

A new study conducted by the organisation has found that if emissions are not reduced then the global temperature will rise above the advised two degrees Celsius mark.

Researchers stressed that even if CO2 output peaked in 2020, there would still be a 50 per cent chance of temperatures increasing by more than two degrees, stressing the need for immediate action.

"If you go to 2025 before peaking, it's virtually impossible to stay under two degrees Celsius," Vicky Pope, head of climate science at the Met Office, told the BBC.

She added: "If you reduced everything to zero immediately you'd still get about 1.3C because of the greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere."

The findings were presented to world leaders at the ongoing climate change summit in Copenhagen.

Under the Climate Change Act, the British government is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions by at least 26 per cent by 2020.
