Residents of the town of Dunbar in Scotland are to be encouraged to take energy-saving steps through the rollout of a new scheme aimed at highlighting the true impact of climate change.
Under the new environmental initiative, East Lothian Council is to use 'Elsa the Kittiwake' to highlight the plight of the sea bird through a new panel to be installed at the waterfront.
While Dunbar remains home to the largest colony of kittiwakes in Scotland, numbers have been steadily declining over recent years, due largely to the fact that numbers of sand eels - the birds' preferred food source - are also falling as a result of the shifting environment.
Welcoming the move, Councillor Paul McLennan said: "I am pleased that the council has been able to support the installation of this new panel, which raises awareness of the impact that our changing environment is having on the seabird population."
Just recently, the government's the UK Climate Projections 2009 report (UKCP09) revealed that the country is set to experience more severe weather patterns as a result of climate change, with winters likely to be wetter and summers drier.
