Many companies are keen to reduce the environmental impact of hardware in their businesses but are not sure how to.
That is according to research carried out by Gartner, which has revealed that PCs and "associated peripherals" contribute nearly a third of worldwide information and communication technology energy use.
Stephen Kleynhans, research vice president at Gartner, has suggested that businesses can no longer ignore the environmental impact of their PCs.
He said: "Organisations increasingly need to establish a plan that contributes to an overall corporate environmental strategy, without interrupting end users' operations."
Gartner has suggested a number of ways businesses can address the environmental performance of their hardware and it has recommended businesses have a set of key performance indicators (KPIs).
These KPIs will help businesses to measure their energy efficiency and the company also suggested that companies need to have an accurate reporting and auditing mechanism to track the success of a program.
A recent survey by Gartner revealed that the majority of companies would maintain investment in Green IT projects, despite monetary pressures created as a result of the recession.
