Companies will be obliged to disclose their carbon emissions under an amendment being made to the Climate Change Bill.
The amendment, added by the government, will help businesses go green, climate change minister Joan Ruddock told the Telegraph.
She said: "This will allow companies to demonstrate their green credentials and provide transparency for investors and consumers. It aims to stimulate businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards a productive low carbon future."
The amendment could help the government meet the target of reducing carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 a target which is to be set down in an other amendment to the bill currently making its way through parliament.
Yesterday the government also added that the aviation and shipping sectors' emissions would be taken into account when calculating progress toward meeting the target.
The addition of those sectors marked the second time in a month when the government took steps to make the Climate Change Bill more stringent.
