Climate change affecting wildlife, National Trust reports

31 December 2008

British wildlife is being put at risk as the affects of climate change start to be felt in the countryside, the National Trust has warned.

Issuing its end of year report, the conservation group has revealed that this year's warm spring, followed by a wet summer, had a negative impact on a number of native species.

For example, the mild start to the year brought out plants and flowers and thereby encouraged some birds to nest too early, while a the cold snap experienced in the autumn led to the death of bees and a shortage of sources of food for the country’s bats.

Commenting on the trends, Matthew Oates, the National Trust nature conservation adviser, stated: "Climate change is not some future prediction of what might happen, it's happening now."

"Many species closely associated with the four seasons are having to cope with higher incidents of poor weather as our climate becomes more unpredictable," he added.

Illustrating the problem, it was recently reported that daffodils flowered in some parts of England in time for Christmas.
