A new bill that lists proposals for clean coal technologies has been introduced in parliament.
The draft Energy Bill makes a case for the funding and establishment of four demonstration plants for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
It builds on plans listed in a consultation document which details a strategy that will help the UK to maintain a balance between carbon emission reduction and a diverse range of energy production sources.
Climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: "We're moving fast on CCS. It's a critical technology in the fight against climate change and I want the UK to lead the world with it. This bill is about providing the finance needed for the construction of commercial-scale demonstration plants.
"Through CCS we can develop a new high-tech industrial sector, we can maintain a diverse energy mix and, once deployed around the world, make a major contribution to the fight against climate change."
CCS is a technology through which carbon generated through power stations is captured and stored underneath the sea bed in order to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.
