Britain will keep to its pledges to cut carbon emissions and develop renewables despite the economic downturn, prime minister Gordon Brown has said.
Speaking by video to the British Wind Energy Association, Mr Brown said that his pledge to generate 15 per cent of electricity from renewables would create jobs and a £100 billion industry.
Instead of dropping the UK's environmental commitments he said that holding fast to them could help the country weather the financial downturn.
"You may have heard some people say that these difficult economic times should or will reduce the government's commitment to building a low carbon economy. They should not and will not," he said.
"On the contrary, the investment and jobs we will create from our commitment to low carbon energy is one of the drivers that will bring us prosperity."
Last week energy and climate change secretary of state Ed Miliband announced that the UK would actually raise its carbon reduction target from 60 per cent to 80 per cent.
