Wales 'could be world class centre for marine energy'

Marine energy has been highlighted as a potential cornerstone to Wales's renewables future.

Speaking at the British Wind Energy Association's (BWEA) Cymru conference, the Welsh Assembly Government's (WAG) environment, sustainability and housing minister Jane Davidson outlined the future for the country's renewables development.

Ms Davidson expressed a hope that the country could become a "world class" centre of excellence for marine energy as she spoke of the WAG's new energy strategy, New Energy Focus reports.

The programme is to be developed alongside the Welsh Renewable Energy Roadmap, Ms Davidson said in her address to the conference.

She stated that 33 Terrawatt hours of energy could be generated within 20 years, although WAG figures estimate that this would require some 3,000 megawatts of capacity.

The conference was the largest of its kind dedicated solely to the Welsh renewable energy sector.
