The UK needs to increase its current renewable energy generation tenfold if it expects to meet European Union renewable energy targets by 2020, the Renewable Energy Association (REA) has claimed.
In order for the UK to produce 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources within the next 12 years, it must examine ways in which this goal can be achieved, carbonfree.co.uk reported.
The REA, along with the mayor of London, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, is currently working to promote a feed-in tariff scheme, which would enable citizens and firms outside of the energy industry to invest in the production of renewable energy.
Established in 2001, the REA represents producers of renewable energy in Britain and was formerly known as the Renewable Power Association.
The association is currently accepting nominations for its British Renewable Energy Awards 2008, a collaboration with reNews.
Awards will be presented to renewable energy advocates, developers and champions in June.
