UK renewable energy firm Ener-g is to join a £1.6 million sustainable energy project in South Africa to generate clean electricity from landfill gases, it has emerged.
The firm will collaborate with South African partner Energy Systems under the name Ener-g Systems.
It is set to begin work on the project - located near Durban - next month after a public consultation process is completed.
The project will eventually see harmful landfill gases such as methane captured.
The gases will then be used to provided power for an internal spark ignition engine.
Ener-g said the generator has the potential to eventually deliver power for up to 1,900 households in the area.
Dave Cornish, general manager of Ener-g Systems, said: "The extraction of methane will dramatically reduce the potential of fires and odours on the site, because there will be active gas management."
He added that the technology involved in the extraction process may also improve air quality for local residents.
