UK 'could be world leader in renewable energy'

01 February 2008

The wind industry has voiced its support of the EU's recent announcement that by 2020 the UK should provide 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources.

The British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) has stated that Britain could go on to be a world leader in renewable energy if it can achieve the targets set out by the EU commission.

Currently the UK supplies the third lowest amount of renewable energy at two per cent; however, Maria McCaffery, BWEA chief executive, has commented that the commission's ruling is a "revolution for the UK's energy supply."

Calling for the government to work with the renewable energy industry, Ms McCaffery stated: "Wind energy is the next North Sea oil. Britain could be a world leader in renewable energy if we have the will to make this vision a reality."

"In order to reach the new target there will need to be a step change in government policy to harness the UK's potential."

The EU commission's proposals for the UK also included ten per cent of road transport fuels to be acquired from renewable sources by 2020.
