UK, Poland push for transnational renewable targets

10 June 2008

The UK and Poland will table plans at this week's meeting of EU energy ministers to allow nations to collaborate in reaching renewable energy targets, diplomats said on Thursday.

The plans will be presented at Friday's meeting of EU energy ministers.

The pair will propose that EU members missing their renewable targets should be able to trade their excess cuts with other nations.

They will also contend that collaborating states should be allowed to take on joint renewables projects and divide carbon credit.

"Poland finds new alternative instruments of flexibility as a better tool for more effective fulfillment of 27 national renewables targets," Polish deputy economy minister Marcin Korolec was quoted as saying.
