Sweden aims to derive nearly half its energy from renewable sources by 2020, according to energy and enterprise minister Maud Olofsson.
Mrs Olofsson said Sweden intended to increase its share of renewable energy to 49 per cent from the current 40 per cent level to honour binding targets set by the European Union.
The 40 per cent figure is already the highest level of clean energy in the world.
The achieve the cuts the Swedish government aims to cut pollution from cars and raise taxes on CO2 output.
"This would be the highest share in the world," she said in a speech in Washington, adding: "Today Sweden has an almost fossil free energy system - except for the transportation sector. Renewable energy makes up 40 per cent of our energy consumption. Oil's share of energy supply is less than a third and it will continue to decrease."
The EU wants a 30 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 if other international partners agree.
Sweden has cut CO2 emissions nine per cent since 1990.
