A Californian-based company that is a leader in ethanol production technology has received its first instalment of funding from the US department of energy (DOE).
The loan has been awarded to ethanol plant BlueFire Mecca and it plans to produce 17 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol using BlueFire Ethanol Fuels technology.
Commenting on the new plant, Arnold Klann, chief executive of BlueFire Ethanol, said: "It will serve as the effective meeting place of demand and supply, bringing cellulosic ethanol to market while simultaneously helping break dependence on foreign oil and reducing the waste management load on cities."
Describing the facility as the "future of alternative fuel production", Klann has suggested that the technology can be replicated to build more biofuel production companies across the US.
BlueFire Ethanol Fuels is the first company of its kind to produce cellulose-to-ethanol from waste products.
