Setting recycling targets across the European Union can help mitigate the effects of climate change, according to new research.
Based on a Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) report, the study by the European Environmental Bureau Federation argued that with 50 per cent of municipal waste recycled by 2020, more than 89 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year could be cut, the equivalent of taking 31 million cars off the road.
This report said recycling offered more environmental benefits and lower environmental impacts than other waste management options.
EEBF policy officer Nathalie Cliquot said: "The report shows that waste legislation can contribute to fighting climate change if we go along waste prevention and recycling lines then this should lead to significant CO2 reductions."
The average recycling rate across the EU at present is 37 per cent
Friends of the Earth senior waste campaigner Michael Warhurst said: "This study shows the massive potential benefits of targets for municipal waste. Friends of the Earth's analysis shows that it is crucial that targets for business waste are also agreed.
