Birmingham plans to cut its carbon emissions by 60 per cent in less than two decades, putting the UK¿s second biggest city ahead of its rivals.
Deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, Paul Tilsley said Birmingham was the only UK city chosen to be part of a new environmental initiative backed by former US president Bill Clinton.
The city is set to receive part of £15 million investment from IT firm CISCO to develop technologies to tackle global warming and is due to test technology in new housing developments through the Connected Urban Development programme.
Mr Tilsley said: "We are the largest local authority in the UK so everything we do will have a big impact.
"It is all about what we can do to influence and impact on others and any programmes or initiatives that we are part of would have to be the biggest."
