Volkswagen has unveiled the latest addition to its growing green fleet, the fuel-efficient Up Lite.
Making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show this week, represents a significant upgrade on the standard Up model, with the majority of the modifications made with the aim of boosting efficiency.
In particular, the Lite boasts the more traditional front engine, front drive set-up, rather than the regular Up's rear engine, rear drive configuration, while a sleeker and more lightweight chassis helps cut fuel consumption rates.
However, it is this lightness that means that it may be some time before businesses will be able to build their green fleets around the Up as a full market roll-out looks some way off.
"The car features expensive materials like aluminium and carbonfibre, expensive batteries and an expensive diesel engine too, so it would be triply difficult to bring to market at a good price," the head of research and development at VW, Ulrich Hackenberg told Autocar.
At the same time, Ford has stated that its new Fiesta will be the most energy-efficient model it has launched in the US market.
