Race cars taking part in the British Touring Car Championships (BTCC) next season will have their emissions tested for the first time.
The BTCC has recently completed testing a S2000 car on a rolling road to benchmark emissions, series director Alan Gow announced.
He told the BTCC website: "The rolling road test we'd put a BTCC car through now gives us a meaningful reading when comparing their CO2 emissions to those of showroom equivalents."
The Energy Efficient Motorsport (EEMS) organisation is working with BTCC to help reduce emissions and improve the championship's environmental performance.
EEMS was set up to help the motorsport industry adapt to environmental laws and claims that the sector will benefit from taking a leading global role in becoming more efficient.
Last month, the EEMS reported that a biofuel-powered motorcycle won a race for the first time.
Using alternative fuel, Peterborough-based Team Inzane won a UK Mini Twins category race at Norfolk's Snetterton race track.
