Mercedes is preparing to launch the latest addition to its green transport range.
The first batch of the German carmaker's new B-Class F-Cell models are expected to start making their way into European and American showrooms at the beginning of next year.
Thomas Weber, Mercedes' head of research and development, said: "2009 is the year in which we are establishing further milestones where sustainable mobility is concerned. The B-Class F-Cell is taking on a pioneering role as the world's first fuel cell powered automobile to be produced under series production conditions."
According to developers, the four-door vehicle, which is well-suited for daily use, is the first car to run on electric power while boasting the driving dynamics of a two-litre model.
Speeds of up to 170km/h can be reached by the green transport option, which does not produce any carbon emissions.
Prospective drivers have been reassured by Mercedes that the B-Class F-Cell meets the same safety levels as its other vehicles with conventional combustion engines.
