Almost six in ten people (59 per cent) across the world are interested in purchasing green cars, new research has revealed.
The study of 13,500 consumers by market research firm Synovate found that 37 per cent of people would buy a low carbon or electric car if they could afford it.
In addition, more than one in five (22 per cent) said that a green vehicle would be their ideal car.
Scott Miller, chief executive of Motoresearch at Synovate, said: "Car makers are producing more and more options that will appeal to this fast-growing group of green-inclined people."
He added: "There will always be a group of people who do not want to compromise on dream cars for green reasons. The answer? The 22 per cent who want both are the way of the future. Car makers will produce vehicles that are dream and green."
Earlier this year, the UK government announced that it would offer subsidies for car buyers interested in purchasing green vehicles.
